I’m wondering where my 880 fits in your generation description and its approximate date of manufacture. It has a multicolored molded diamond in the forestock, metal pump handle and receiver, and was made in America. Have you been able to get any manufacturer lot number info? Mine is lot number 9F09813. All help is greatly appreciated. If helpful, how can I attach a photo? Bob Harris

    Hi Bob,
No pic needed. Your 880 was manufactured in Sept. 1989. If you have Gary Garber’s book, the lot and reg. # system is in there.

Hello. I have two 880s. One is actually a Sears Ted Williams “El Dorado” which is a Variant 1 (Old Style). Its serial number is L902852. Any info on what year it was made?
The second is a Daisy Powerline 880 which has metal reciever plates, metal pump arm, inlaid diamonds on the forearms, one screw holding the wobbly stock, brass pump tube. Its serial number is 5C03889. Any info on what year it was made? Would that be considered a Variant 2 since it has the inlaid forearms, but still has a metal pump arm? Thanks for any info.

Your first 880 is, I’m guessing, a model 799-190721. The LOT NO. breaks down as being made Dec. 1979 and would have been at the end of the Ted Williams marked 880s, after that they were only marked “SEARS”.

Your second 880 was made March 1985. I like this version because it doesn’t have the molded warning/instruction “billboards” on the receiver, and the loading port is open on both sides and may be the type with a wider loading area. The “narrow” port is about 0.240”, the “wide” port is about 0.250” and this makes loading pointed and domed pellets a lot easier.

    Good luck!

    Cobalt,
Thanks for the info. I have another question for you. I recently replaced the o-rings in my 1985 .177 880. Now, the front sight slides forward about 1/16″ with each shot. On the third shot, it and the barrel fall out. I tried mashing the barrel shroud tighter onto the front sight, but it didn’t help. Any ideas? Thanks.

The barrel is held in the valve body (aka VB) by a clamp and screw. The barrel has a slot machined into it that mates with a raised boss on the VB. When the seal that goes between the barrel and VB is new, it has some compressibility to it so when the screw is tightened, the seal compresses and that’s basically what holds the barrel in place, along with the slot and boss. This seal also seals the transfer port of the VB to hole in the barrel- this is how the pressure reaches the back side of the pellet. It’s important to align the hole in the barrel to the transfer port of the VB, if it’s off power will be lower than it should be. When the gun ages, the seal becomes hard and sets up to the installed thickness. This leaves no clamping force to hold the barrel. Unfortunately that seal is no longer made by Daisy. So if this is the problem you will have to improvise a fix. Some have used a small piece of surgical tubing with a hole through it for the transfer port. I have heard some people have made a thin shim between the seal and the VB to add some thickness back to the assembly so the barrel is clamped down better.

    Cobalt,
Thanks again for the info. My model has no screw holding the barrel that I can see. Barrel also has no slot, unlike my older 1979 model barrel that does have a slot. This 1985 model seems to have some old style parts (brass pump tube, metal pump arm, metal receivers), but also has some new style parts (barrel without screw or slot, diamond inlays on forearms). The VB and barrel seems to be new style. Any ideas how to shim a new style barrel? Thanks.

PS Unlike my old style barrel, which has a hole in it to allow the air in, this barrel has no hole.

If the barrel is a press fit and the transfer port empties into the VB behind the end of the barrel and not through a hole in the barrel itself, I would use either JB Weld or Loctite Red Threadlocker to secure it back into the VB. That will keep it from coming out when you shoot. If by “shim the barrel” you’re talking about the front sight ID is a too-loose fit to the barrel OD, a wrap or two of tape will make the fit snug. Myself, I like to use a 2-1/2″ piece of the “BB Tube” p/n 138389-000 BB TUBE, $1.00 each made for the Daisy model 901 to stabilize the barrel. I simply slide the cut down BB tube onto the barrel, then install the barrel shroud.

I went back and rechecked a few of my guns and found that May, 1982 is the last date I have seen with the barrel clamped to VB. This is the type that uses the barrel-to-VB seal.
March, 1985 is the first date I have seen with (new style) barrel pressed into VB. Uses older style cup seal and brass compression tube.
Now, these dates are from what I can verify and the dates will narrow as I find new guns to check.

As far as variations, I have documented MANY changes to the 880 through the years. More info on that can be seen HERE.

Patrick, if you can please tell me how wide the loading slot is where the pellet is loaded. There were two widths of the slot and your gun was made right when the change was being made from the early “narrow” slot to the “wide” slot. A narrow slot measures about 0.240″, the wide slot is about 0.350″.

    Thanks, Mark
